I had a great Dell laptop I thought there would be nothing like it - the look, the strength and its capbilities, it lasted me 18 months, the customer service center was no good, I felt like it was a complete waste of money.
Now I have an acer new 17inch and it's amazing. I wouldn't go back to Dell again.
Like you said, the capabilites are the same, think after the specs, customer service and spares etc. any problems that may occur are much better solved by acer.Enjoy!

Dell everytime. You can have an easy life with Dell, as ACER is not very compatible with hardware that belongs to other brands.
