Based on the law, when a woman marries, she will assume the surname of her husband. Likewise, their children will also assume the surname of their father.

For you ladies! Do you think this practice is fair? Do you feel sidelined? Do you feel there is anything particular about it?

The other day, I emailed an old school friend, Kathy X, and I did not know she was already married.

When she replied a day later, she told me she was already married and her name now is Kathy Y. She also emphasised she be addressed as Kathy Y in future. From her email, she seemed quite defensive about it.

Do ladies feel anything sensitive about this, ie, being addressed appropriately?

There is a tendency, amonst working women in particular, not to change their surname. It was customary in good old days that women were to produce children and take care of them at home and the husband looked after material needs of the family.

It naturally flows that surname of the husband will determine the household to which u belong. The situation is different today and hence the question and the present tendency not to change the surname.

In any case, once u change ur surname u wud not like to be known by any other name.
