My gf and I (both late 20s) are planning a holiday in Malta in April. What area of Malta is the best to stay in? We're not really beachy people, or clubby types - just prefer to do a bit of everything!!

Anywhere on Malta is not far from anywhere else.
Silema is the capital and is very good for sightseeing also you can get a bus from there to anywhere else.
Buggiba ,Qwara and St Paul's bay are where the tourist usually end up staying, not a bad place as a base to get out and about from.
Paceville is full of nightlife and can get very rowdy at the week ends.
When going to Gozo you can get the ferry yourself if just going to Victoria (just up the hill from the ferry port). Or book a trip at your local shop very reasonably priced and they will show you all the sights.

There's some great suggestions by others here and I'd supplement their advice by having a look through a hotel directory of Malta.

Take a look at the comparitive star ratings, prices, locations and amenities by using the sort filters. The pictures should tell you a thousand words.

You could also research The Malta National Tourism website.

Hope that helps

Well, in that case, I'll opt for Sliema. Central place, shopping, entertainment, beach and everything...
