I own a shop, and can think of a couple of things. You must ask yourself "what am I going to do with the engine" in order to decide things like, "do I need a 2 bolt main or 4 bolt main engine"? Will the oil pan fit the space it goes in, or do I need one that is smaller, or turned the other way? Where do I want the motor to make the most torque? Such as a special towing type cam profile. Do I want a flex plate or a flywheel? Do I need an auxiliary oil filter, or a standard set up? Regular flow or reverse flow cooling system? Will your headers work with the straight or angle plug configuration? Do you want an engine that runs off regular octane, or does it require high octane fuel? Is the engine for an automatic, or manual transmission, and does it require a pilot bearing, or a pilot bushing in the crank shaft? That's about all I can think of that you may need.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

you're saying it quite is not the starter, so I could *assume* that it cranks nice while warm, it in simple terms won't start up? it quite is that your choke is imporperly setup. have you ever talked approximately and changed the choke to ensure it quite is working suitable while the engine is warmed up? After that, warmth soak may be the undertaking, yet could have been eradicated on that motor vehicle by using gasoline return line, it quite is the only reason GM went to those on carbureted setups. person-friendly verify for warmth soak is to easily get rid of your air purifier, and artwork the throttle on an identical time as looking down the bores. Do you notice gasoline squirt out into the venturi's? in case you do, the undertaking isn't warmth soak. in case you do not, the undertaking IS warmth soak. tremendously straightforward, if the glide bowl is empty, it won't start up till gasoline is moved into it via way of the gasoline pump, which takes the engine rotating to artwork. chillier thermostat won't artwork, it quite is a bandaid for a fallacious cooling equipment. If the motor vehicle does not cool nicely, that quite may be the undertaking, regardless of the undeniable fact which you would be able to could handle the basis reason (too little coolant pass, wiped out radiator, fan not working wisely, sticky thermostat) to actual resolve the undertaking. A thermostat is in simple terms designed to get the engine as much as working temperature. It won't be able to administration *overheating* because it quite is completely open close to it quite is rated temperature...if the engine overheats with a 195*, it quite is going to overheat with a a hundred and sixty* thermostat.

Please consult the GM Performance 2006 Catalog part no. 19157556 available at any Chevrolet parts counter, (07 catalog at the beginning of March). You may want to consider the 12499106 383 partial engine. It comes with a 12,000 GM warranty. Every part is factory fresh, no rebuilt parts. If you use the Vortec 64 cc. iron heads PN / 12558060 iron heads. It'll knock out 340 hp. 3,500 rpm. and 435 lb. ft. @4,000 rpm.. All this on 87 octane gas.

If your ordering a "crate 350 engine" for the specific year and model, "they" or "it" should have said if ther are oddities you will face when ready to drop it in.
I'd call and ask the Company your buying from and at least get this question to a GM mechanic.
Best wishes.

Lots of good answers but one thing that wasn't mentioned is if your car doesn't have a electric fuel pump make sure that the engine you get has the mount for a mechanical pump.
