Yesterday I injured my neck and I was wondering if its worth it to go to the ER. I was reaching up above my head and tieing something on a ladder very tight. When I went to tie the knot harder i heard/felt my neck pop. Sine then my neck has gotten so stiff I can BARELY get in/out of bed without grunting and having sharp pains in my neck. The only reason I would go to the ER is for pain medicine because nothing over-the-counter is helping and I cannot remove a hand from my neck without getting sharp pains. I'm sure all they will wanna do is an x-ray or something and tell me 2 go 2 a chiropractor but the pain is unbearable. Any advice???

Sorry. Forgot to add that I tried Icy Hot... and that this problem ususally happens once every 3 months. This one by far is the worst pain though.

From your description, it sounds as if you have strained some muscles/ligaments.
The more serious injuries to discs, spine, are seldom accompanied by a "pop."
If it doesn't resolve itself with rest, cold and anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen, it would be worth consulting with a physician before embarking on chiropractic or physical therapy treatments.
Unfortunately, while the neck can take an amazing amount of rough treatment, once something starts to go wrong, it takes amazingly little to turn a moderate problem into an extremely serious problem with the improper treatment.
While an X-ray would be valuable in accessing any damage to bones, they will not help in accessing disc health and or damage.
If you have tingling or numbness in your arms, hands, legs or feet since the injury, then the odds of a more serious amount of damage to the cervical spine increase dramatically and will require a visit to an MD. If you lose control of bowel or bladder, then it becomes a medical emergency and a journey to the ER.

You have a recurring problem that is getting worse all the time. It is time you got serious about treating it. Right now it typically occurs every 3 months or so, and last how long? a few days? Keep ignoring it, wishing it away, and in a few years it will be every other month for a week! And, it will be LESS easy to treat the longer you wait.
You probably should see a physician, just to get meds to help with acute pain and to get referral to a physical therapist. The PT can help you get to the bottom of this, so you will have fewer painful episodes that are less intense and shorter in duration.
Go to APTA.org, click "find a PT", and search your home area.
Good luck!

I wish I had this 2 years ago when I damaged my rotator cuff while showing off. This is very detailed and really gives you the techniques you need to sort out your own shoulder issues and a lot more info such as preventing further injuries. If you have a shoulder keeping you awake at night you'll know it's no laughing matter.

You have a cervical subluxation. A chiropractor will adjust it easily in 15 seconds. If you are in a metropolitan area, please call a chiropractor now. You'll get an answering service, if it's night where you are, and then the doctor will contact you. This is a pain management emergency, silly. You do not have to hurt like this. And, more damage is occurring as long as it remains subluxed. Go. Phone. Now.

This could be because of muscle fatigue or dehydration. Try exercising all parts of your body. It also sometimes is due to disuse atrophy. Try out some home remedies. You can also look for information in the web that give you home remedies. I found this website very useful. http://aches.in/cramps.html
