individual nations rely on the ability to leverage their natural resources for trade and prosperity. imperialism does the disservice of sapping the area of it's natural resources (such as ore, oil, trees, and even people) diverting wealth away from the people who should at least benefit from their own land. this creates a deficit of resources for people who actually live on the land. when there's a deficit or lack of resources, prices rise incredibly - inflation.

there is an environmental factor to take into consideration. these nations destroy the land to find resources - pollution, deforestation, and so on.

there is also a damaging social factor as well. most people do not appreciate their lands being damaged. so when they try to fight back, they end up in a war they can not win.

imagine what happened in africa. europeans brought their guns compared with the africans with bows, arrows and spears. they were slaughtered without mercy. diamonds, gold, spices, etc etc etc were all sapped from many nations in africa. the people have never and will never see a dime from this unless they figure out a way to take their land back. it's difficult to come together to do this when they constantly fight over the little bit of resources that left over from what europeans have pillaged already.

in contrast look at a nation like china. china has maintained a great deal of autonomy over their own land. with vast resources available at the drop of a hat, china is now becoming one the worlds largest super powers surpassing the USA. with one billion plus people, there's nothing stopping them.

imagine what africa would be like if individual nations were able to protect themselves from european invasion and imperialism. the middle east has been able to gain some protection from europeans which is why they are able to build things like the world islands and palm islands (i believe that's the correct name). south american nations like venezuela under president chavez are repatriating a lot of their resources from foreign imperialists which is causing a lot of the current tensions because the imperialists or big business iare being kicked out. that means a lot of people with govt connections are losing billions of dollars since they can't sap the natural resources of other nations anymore. also, it's setting a dangerous precedent for other nations because they will want to repatriate if nations like Venezeula show success.

the reason most nations don't have great success is because once businesses have been repatriated, other nations and businesses STOP doing business altogether. it's basically sanctions. they intend to punish those nations by ensuring they never get a chance to trade anything in the future damning the people from ever being able to grow.

however, the good thing about chavez and venezuela is that chavez is trying to create an economic block within south america that wouldn't rely on foreign (read: european and american) business. also, chavez has built alliances with other nations like iran. the purpose here is to not suffer like some african nations have been made to suffer when they repatriate acces to their resources. usa is giving chavez a very hard time with this because it will be mostly americans that will lose out. being that only about 1% of america is uber rich, they could stand to lose a few bucks for the good of millions of people in venezuela.
