they may feel a sense of duty related to low self esteem that their only worth is when someone gives them a pat on the back, because they can't pat themselves on the back due to low self esteem..

or if they are rescuing someone important to them, it may also be low self esteem..that they would feel lost or alone without the other person that they love..

also it may bring a sense of excitement to their otherwise boring lives and give them a reason in their own mind why they were brought into this world, difficult as it is

it has been shown that babies tend toward introversion or extroversion very early on...introverts may have lower self esteem than extroverts and get less pats on the back in general and so may crave more excitement and pats on the back...

Nature I would think. Bravery seems like it would be instinctive and reflexive. I am not sure how someone could be taught to be brave. Seems that upbringing and experience could teach us to be fearful and cautious, but even with that, the instinctive behavior would take over if the need ever arose.

Those of us who's job's involve a large amount of personal risk to ensure the continued safety of others each day seem to have a fair amount in common regarding personality's IE confidant, self assured, individuals resourceful, quick thinking and passionate with a strong sense of purpose yet at the same time very personable instantly likable and reassuring, to those people its a job, a very rewarding one and also an extremely difficult one at times but you find them to be amongst the most satisfied and for-filled people your ever likely to meet, so do they get up each day and on their way to work think about how lucky homebody's gonna be because of hero's like themselves?. Doubt it, in fact most would get annoyed if you kept on referring to them as such so are they in fact just professionals doing a job that they have an aptitude for just as an architect has for designing buildings.. Personally I believe true bravery exists within us all and true heroism happens when the likes of everyday people find themselves in extraordinary circumstances and are suddenly aware that they are capable of doing something equally as extraordinary because of their position or something they know that others don't and in that moment they don't ponder on how dangerous or difficult it may be they just do it because they feel compelled to it is a state of total self belief they must because they know they can.

I think it is nature. I think a person does not control anything on its talent and character. I am controlled and you are controlled. A strength of bravery is given to a person by nature and controlled by nature, that is my understanding.
