I was just wondering at work today. I know you shouldn't use hot water moping a tile floor because it will mess the wax up.

** But does it REALLY matter the temperature of water when doing general cleaning?

Hot water is better for cleanning.

Heat almost always makes cleaning more aggressive, in any setting.

I can think of three common behaviors that contribute to this:
1) increased reaction rates - (kinetics)
heat speeds up all reactions, even those as humble as
water wetting it's way along the interface between some slime
and the fiber of your clothing.
2) increased dissolving abilities - (due to entropy)
even without soap, small amounts of some greases will dissolve
in water.
In hot water, the amount that will dissolve can be ten times higher.
3) melting -
some greases are low-melting waxes, and being melted makes it easier
for the soapy water to penetrate, detach, and surround them.

if we're talking clothes washing it is very important. you should always wash in cold water when doing colours as hot water can make the colours run badly. its fine to wash whites in hot though because there is not colour to run and it is tougher on stains.

When general cleaning i.e dishes, floors etc hot is usually better for a couple of reasons. firstly it disinfects. but it has to be hot hot not luke warm otherwise thats a bacteria breading ground. secondly, it actually lifts grease and grit easier. try doing a load of really gross dishes in cold or luke warm water and see how much more difficult it is to get rid of the dirt. also all your dishes will be left with a filmy non washed residue and could still have food bacteria on them.

No I don't think it really matters, You may want to use hot water when you want germs killed in maybe your bedding and towels.
Just wash your everyday clothes in cold water it doesnt really make any difference

I just think that using warm water makes things cleaner. It may be a mental thing.

It matters only to your hands! if you are doing any cleaning using water, ie washing down walls, your car, windows etc, it doesn't matter if the water is cold, as its cleaned by the action of washing as much as by the temperature. But if you are doing a lot you might like to use warm water to stop your hands freezing!

Yes hot water decolorates things. Cold water keeps things their original color longer

no it doesnt when it comes to just cleaning a house. but when you are cleaning dishes, it is important that even once a week, you'll be cleaning them with hot water.
