Tons!

I feel I'm good to answer this question, as I've done both (IT can be SW engr's too!).

IT stands for information technology. Normally IT people take care of computers, phones, networking equipment, and just about any other data need for a company. This means setting up, configuring, and troubleshooting them. Most of the time they use software on these computers, they don't ever see any programing.

A Computer Software Engineer usually means someone who programs. If you are familiar with programing, you know computers are programed with some sort of programing language. A software engineer writes in a programing language to make programs that run on the computer (IE: Firefox, MS word, Windows XP, adobe photoshop, linux).

The two jobs can overlap, sometimes IT people do some programing, and sometimes Software Engineers have to fix computers that are broken.

hope that helps. I enjoy both jobs very much

IT (information technology) is managing the needs of a computer system for a small system of computers, or a single system or server: sales and customer service, installing hardware and software, networking, repairing and troubleshooting, wiring, assembling, protecting, and training people to know how to use their machines etc. From a business perspective, IT is either a service provided to other people with computer needs, or a position within a company for a person or team to take care of a business' computer needs. IT is tech support for the machine and its data.

Computer software engineering, is more on the front end of production for the mass market, designing software to work with existing or soon to exist hardware. This includes researching the market to find out what the public wants and needs, anticipating trends in security, etc, and designing products to deal with them, creating the technology to make new programs possible, creating new ways of using existing technology, developing new computer languages and OS to support different needs.

They affect each other for sure. When new things are developed by engineers, the first ones to know how to use it are the IT guys. IT professionals are often trained by the engineers on how to get the most out of machines and the data on them...which in return they have to teach to others.
