My motto in life is that I and I alone am responsible for my happiness. If I'm not happy then I do something to change it. It is definitely within my control. I think sometimes we don't know ourselves well enough to know what truly makes us happy and so fail to recognise those moments when we have them. I also believe that we can only really value happiness when we have seen real misery.

Yes! Happiness takes work - it doesn't just happen most of the time. I agree with Mark Twain - I think most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be :-)
