Basically, they will just ask how you are, various questions regarding your problem, they will take notes and prescribe medication if necessary. They may recommend setting up counselling sessions, which you will first need to attend an assessment to see which type of counselling is right for you. And that is it basically. Nothing to be nervous about.
The wait is the longest part!
Good luck : )

Talking to the Psychiatrist for the First Time
Describe what you are feeling and ask for advice. If what the counselor is telling you does not seem reasonable, go to someone else for a second opinion.
Do not let the person bully you into something you are not comfortable doing. Do not start medication unless you are convinced that what is being said makes sense - the medications create problems of their own. And psychiatrists are good at prescribing medication on the first visit, which I dislike. Unless the session lasted at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours and you described in substantial detail what you have been going through, I would be very wary of taking any medication.
Talking to a counselor / therapist is good, but no productive results may occur for three or four visits. It takes that long for you to feel comfortable with the person.
When you do visit the counselor / psychiatrist make sure you are comfortable with the person, make sure you are comfortable with the ideas presented and suggestions made, and if you are prescribed medicine, make sure you feel you have had a complete diagnosis.
Change the person if you are not comfortable.
> ,tomorrow i have my third meeting with the psychologist , who to my mind should be working for the teletubbies ....the last meeting > resulted in a civilised, yet total disregard for what i was saying.
If you don't like the psychologist, change him/her. You are doing yourself no favours by accommodating him/her. I'd suggest that you accept the offer to go and see a psychiatrist.
The second issue is that therapy takes longer than you think. From my experience, I would say that the first four or five sessions are unproductive generally. You are defensive, the psych is trying to figure out both the surface and underlying problems and both you and the psych are trying to become comfortable with each other. Reality may not be high on the agenda in the first few sessions.

Don't worry. The first visit is the easiest. They will give you paperwork with a lot of medical and social questions. Then they will ask you a lot of general questions. Not "What does this ink blot look like?", just stuff like "Who lived in your home while you were growing up?", and "What kinds of grades do (did) you get in school?" Then they will ask you why you're there. Just be honest and share whatever feels comfortable. The point is to build a relationship, so you don't have to spill your guts on the first day.

As its your 1st appointment you will probably just go over general issues, how you are feeling, what you want to get from the sessions etc.
It depends too if its a NHS one, or a private one. They work differenlty. If its a NHS one then they will kinda assess you in the first couple of sessions.
They will help you, and guide you on what to tell them

You will get help. He/she will encourage you to give him information that he/she can use to give you advice about your particular problem.
Remember they are the experts and they have met lots of people just like you. You will not surprise or shock them. They have heard it all before.

They make you lie down on a couch and show you pictures of ink blots. Don't you watch movies or T.V.?
