this happened after I was downloading songs and my laptop went into sleep mode. I haven't been able to use the dvd/cd drive since except for watching dvd's.

Some DVD/RW have senstive lens therefore they cannot read pirated CDs. It can play DVD of course it is a DVD/RW, but you're saying it cannot play CD; that's because it can no longer read any CD except DVD or it's just simply a techincal error.

On the CD burn mode there are three or so selections on what type of CD burn. Maybe one of those selections will do the trick.
