Tuna is one of the biggest no no's as far as fish consumption is concerned during pregnancy. I will read an excerpt about this and other fish...
"Certain types of fish are OFF LIMITS during pregnancy. The reason: Pollutants such as mercyry, dioxins, PCB's and pesticides are absorbed by some fish as they swim and feed in tainted waters. Eating large doses of these contaminents has been linked to miscarriage, preterm birth, and physical and developmental delays....
Fortunately, only some fish contain harmful amounts of pollutants. For instance, shark, king mackerel, swordfish and tilefish carry the highest concentrations. Steer away from them completely while pregnant....
TUNA ALSO CONTAINS MODERATELY HIGH LEVELS OF MERCURY, SO LIMIT YOUR CONSUMPTION TO NO MORE THAN 6 OUNCES OF "LIGHT" TUNA A WEEK. Albacore or "white" tuna and tuna steaks contain three times as much mecury as light tuna, so lay off those completely for the duration of pregnancy....
It also states to stay away from salmon because although it is low in mercury, farmed salmon has high levels of other contaminants.
I hope that this helps and I also hope the woman eating up to 14 ounces of tuna a week becomes more careful.

The problem with tuna is that it can contain mercury. Generally pregnant women and young children are advised to eat no more than two meals of low-mercury fish per week. One can of light tuna or half a tuna steak is considered one meal. Albacore "white" tuna contains more mercury, so the limit should be 6 oz (~1 meal) of albacore tuna per week. There are other foods that should be avoided during pregnancy, so you might want to check out this website:

I was told you can eat 2 to 3 cans of canned tuna in a week. Also a fully cooked tuna steak is ok, but only once a week as it does contain small amounts of mercury..

I distinctly remember the news having something about there being a small amount of mercury in tuna, and other fish. I think that it'd be in her best interest to keep away from tuna. Congratulations on your bundle of joy, I hope all turns out well! =]

tuna is safe to eat during pregnancy in moderation. they say not to eat more than 6 oz a week because of the mercury levels. But as long as you dont overdo it, tuna is a very healthy choice.

Fish with Mercury: Fish that contain high levels of mercury should be avoided. Mercury consumed during pregnancy has been linked to developmental delays and brain damage. A sample of these types of fish include: shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish. Canned, chunk light tuna generally has less amounts of mercury than other tuna, but still should only be eaten in moderation. Certain types of fish used in sushi should also be avoided due to high levels of mercury. Please see Mercury in Fish for specific types of fish and further information on how to calculate mercury levels.

Up till some weeks in the past, I had heard that in simple terms 4-8 oz..each week replaced into secure. Now (As of till now in June) the FDA (or one in all the different nutrition and wellness workplaces) is saying that pregnant women shouldn't devour ANY tuna.... Too undesirable, yet another concern to function on the checklist of issues we will not %. for lunch!

Yes, in moderation. All fish has mercury levels in it, but her doc. would be able to give her guidelines. I would think a tuna sandwich and a serving of casserole in a week is totally fine.
