There is no particular reason. It is because people started calling it sea at the beginning, when language was forming. The same reason is applicable to almost anything, like why a tree is called a tree, man a man, green as green etc.
If you want origin of every English word, you will be quite at sea.

it is named sea coz in bible there is written after dividing day and night god bless both of them with water and land the large part of water named as sea a drop, a glass, a jug, a pond there is a sea

the sea is a large expanse of saline water connected with the ocean.the word itself was made up by some intellectual as all words are today.probably does not help much its just my opinion
