"When you stop on a stranger's foot in a market place, you apologize profusely for your mistake. If you step on a friend's foot, you know you are already forgiven."
-This is a Buddhist quote, I believe, and it's originally about a "parent's foot" but it applies to friends, as well. If you're really as close as you say, he has already forgiven you, but he still needs to know that you're sorry and he means alot to you.
I would suggest doing something creative for him to say that you're sorry. Something that's specially for him. It's all up to personal taste, but do something nice like make him dinner, make a card lol It doesn't matter what. It's not really about the action, but about the effort.

Explain to him that you really didn't mean to hurt his feelings and let him know how you really feel. Try asking if there is anything you can do for him to forgive you. I hope things would work out.

If this person is as understanding as you Say and knows your whims, he should forgive you. Use this as a lesson to think before you say something, especially something that may hurt.
