Most likely, your computer came with just enough RAM to run WinXP. Most machines ship with 256kb of RAM, which is just enough to run windows, but anything else running, like antivirus software, bogs it down. You should install more RAM, 512mb to a gig is good. It's a very easy process that anyone can do.

No, WindowsXP isn't inherently more prone to viruses. In fact, Vista is more likely to be prone because it hasn't been "battle tested" yet. Once someone finds a vulnerability, Microsoft fixes the hole. XP has been through the process longer than Vista has. There will always be holes, no matter how secure the system, no matter what the operating system. Using antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and a little common sense goes along way to securing your computer. All of these can be gotten free: AVG antivirus, AdAware SE Personal for spyware, ZoneAlarm for the firewall, and a little studying for the common sense.

Vista is probably more prone to attacks cus it needs fine tuning and they will be delivered in updates so XP is not more prone to viruses and attacks.
