based own words you use
example:
kan aku sudah bilang tadi = kan aku sudah cakap tadi = kan aku sudah beri tahu tadi

also from your intonation [sorry, can't provide audio-type example]

but when i'm away from home, i never pretend to be a local.

-edit-
spelling errors above already corrected

shayna, what's "bedek nye" ?

Aiyah..whatla you talking round about lah...actually its very simple to differentiate the so many version of malay...cuma the susah thingy part is that..when you already biasa speaks in Malaysia Malay accent then you go to Singapore..the accent or 'loghat' has already changed' lah.. you need to live with them for about 1-2 years and speak in their accent, then you can 'pusing' telling others that you are a local..

yeah, i've 'been in your shoes' and sometimes its pretty annoying...well, just like BO$$ said..its the better not too pretend to be local as you end up making a fool out of yourself..

just make your own homework regarding the places you are going to..and equiped yourself so other bad 'apples' wont spoil your day..

Malay is the general name for a large group of people staying all over southeast Asia. The different subtypes are so many, one Malay may not even understand the Malay of another. For example, the Kelantanese Malay can sound really weird to a Balinese Malay! So dont worry, be just as you are.

Easy, I'm from Brunei and the best thing about being a bruneian malay is that you can speak malay exactly like malaysians and indonesians but they have no idea how to speak like us.hahaha. Basically bruneian malay substitutes the letter U with O,O with U and the letter E with A or I wherever appropriate. So we say sekolah as skulah, boleh as bulih, sibuk as sibok,Benci as banci.EtC.

Shayna actually you are what...are you a Malaysian or not. cause if you are and you don't know how to speak Malay and cant differential other Malay dialects, then its very bad ... I am not a Malay, but when i speak on the phone people think i am a typical Malay. So like Shah said, i think you are confused ! lol

True...! Susah to check which is which. Mostly Bruneian they always say auk bah, indaku tau ah, but can say same like Sarawak, Malaysian got a lot of diffrent loghat. So for me what ever you come from, at least we understand each other even broken english or malay, its fine with me! To differentiate them, heh4 make wild guess, or ask direct to them, depend what answer we will get.Sometime because of our own individidual slang of speaking, one each have their own style, Either Because of use to it!, or our mixed of frends, terikut2 style durang.

It's the same in any country, take England for example. Somebody from Newcastle can tell the difference between somebody from Liverpool or Manchester or London or Plymouth etc etc (because of the accent)

It's best to be yourself as mentioned, because it looks rather silly trying to pretend being local. Just sort out the taxi fare before you set off if the driver doesn't have a meter in his cab.

Shah, I think you think she thinks too much!

My observations is that Malay people are not hard to differentiate. Talk to them in Bahasa Melayu Baku, you can know where do they come from since they tend to switch to their own dialect. I do hope you know their own dialect....

Malaysians tend to speak the Riau slang (berape, siape, kenape)
Singaporeans tend to speak the Riau slang but it is easier to be differentiated if its a woman speaker. for guys its hard.
Bruneians slang is totally different which tends to be as what ramani (answer above) says

people...people..people...
malaysia sucks man. period.
think about it. what other country int he world practices affirmative action for the majority?
answer - non.
only malaysia.
it is unfair, apartheid like. even apartheid strived to put down the majority race.
when in malaysia the minorty races are already so far down, yet it's ingrained into law to give the malays even more opportunities. but their to lazy to do anything about it.
what a waste. that my friends, is why singapore is better.
