You should just be able to pop in the RAM and everything should work. It is possible to have bad RAM. It's happend to me about twice. Right click on my computer and click properties. It should say the amount of RAM somewhere near the bottom. Virtual memory should be handled by the system automatically. If you've messed around with those settings you might want to double check that, but I doubt simply increasing the amount of RAM would cause your error message. Check out http://www.memtest86.com/

some ram don't work well with some motherboards has allot of errors
also the ram me be bad or not the right speed the computer is made for most older PC will do that if you have more than 1gig of ram
i would try some different ram
i would look up your PC on the Internet and find what ram is most compatible with the mother Bord in it.

all so do not run the old with the new will get errors and if running two must be same type and same brand

Most likely you got yourself a bad stick of memory. It happens.

Take out the new stick and try running that program with just the original stick and see if you still get the error. If not, reinstall the new stick and try it again. If it does not work when the new stick is in, there is definitely something wrong with it.

The problem doesn't lie on your Physical RAM...You need to modify your Virtual memory settings correctly. It can be done from the My Computer properties->Advanced tab and selecting the virtual memory settings.
Set the virtual memory initial & final sizes to 1.5 times to the size of your RAM for best performance.
