Unfortunately you don't say where the other end of the ethernet cable is going.

If it's plugged in your PC, you need a crossover ethernet cable. The cable packed in the 360 will not work that way.

If its plugged into your router, make sure the router is able to give out IP adresses throgh DHCP (look up the documentation of your eouter on how to do that) and let the Xbox automatically get an IP adress.

The first answer about the phone line is nonsense. The Xbox cannot connect to the phone line. It needs a broadband internet access.

IP is from server or router. Check the manuals for setting ip, it sounds like you don't have an ip.
