4WD puts equal power to all wheels (50% Back, 50% Front), while AWD is uneven power to the wheels. (i.e. 70% Back, 30% Front). Some examples of 4WD cars are the Mistubishi Lancer and the Subaru Impreza. Some exaples of AWD are the Lamborghini Gallardo (2007), and the Lexus IS series.

awd (all wheel drive) is chosen by the veichle itself. Say for instance your veichle is front wheel drive equipped with awd. In certain weather conditions if the front wheel slip, the awd will activate the rears to aide in proper control of the veichle. 4wd is chosen manually by thee operator.
