USB flash drives are NAND-type flash memory data storage devices integrated with a USB (universal serial bus) interface. They are typically small, lightweight, removable and rewritable.

Most flash drives use a standard type-A USB connection allowing them to be connected directly to a port on a personal computer.

USB flash drives are compact and easy-to-use flash memory data storage devices integrated with a USB interface. The term "USB flash drive" is a generic term used to describe these products without specifying a particular manufacturer. USB flash drives are sold by many different companies under a variety of different proprietary product names such as JumpDrive, DataTraveler , Attaché and Pen Drive, to name just a few.

USB flash drives with password protection and/or encryption software are offered by multiple manufacturers. Many USB flash drives allow the user to have a public and private partition- the public part is always accessible, while the private part is secured though password or encryption technology. Check with specific manufacturers for security details of specific USB flash drives. Users can also download encryption software onto USB flash drives from the Internet.

Flash memory is a form of non-volatile computer memory that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. It is a technology that is primarily used in memory cards.Flash memory offers fast read access times (though not as fast as volatile DRAM memory used for main memory in PCs) and better kinetic shock resistance than hard disks.

Flash memory is of two types they are :

(a) NOR Flash,
(b) NAND Flash.

NOR Flash (def) :

NOR-based flash has long erase and write times, but has a full address/data (memory) interface that allows random access to any location. This makes it suitable for storage of program code that needs to be infrequently updated, such as a computer's BIOS or the firmware of set-top boxes. Its endurance is 10,000 to 1,000,000 erase cycles. NOR-based flash was the basis of early flash-based removable media;

NAND Flash (def) :

It has faster erase and write times, higher density, and lower cost per bit than NOR flash, and ten times the endurance. However its I/O interface allows only sequential access to data. This makes it suitable for mass-storage devices such as PC cards and various memory cards, and somewhat less useful for computer memory. The first NAND-based removable media format was SmartMedia, and numerous others have followed: MMC, Secure Digital, Memory Stick and xD-Picture Cards. A new generation of these formats is becoming a reality with RS-MMC (Reduced Size MultiMedia Card), the micro- and miniSD variants of Secure Digital and the new USB/Memory card hybrid Intelligent Stick. The new formats exhibit a greatly reduced size, usually under 4 cm².

Principle of operation :

Flash memory stores information in an array of floating gate transistors, called "cells", each of which traditionally stores one bit of information.NAND Flash uses tunnel injection for writing and tunnel release for erasing. NAND flash memory forms the core of the removable USB interface storage devices known as USB flash drives.

uses of Flash Memory :

(a) Flash memory is used by Embedded applications for storing application data in it and by allowing modifications or upgrades of the application code itself. eg: atmel 8052 mc.

(b) its risk-free application salvages images from digital cameras or flash memory cards.eg: MemoryTen.

(c) NOR Flash Memory is used for Cellular Handsets. eg: Intel® NOR Flash.

Advantages of pen drive :

(a) faster data transfer rate due to its serial port connectivity.

(b) secured data storage device due to its encryption capability.

(c) smaller size and shape.

(d) the best portable memory device.

They are portable storage devices, which have become quite popular because of their size and storage capacity. They are memory chips that can hold data and they come in handy when one needs to physically carry them. A lot better than floppies( if u still use them!) and CDs ( saves burning time) and they are reusable. when you connect it to your computer through your USB port, it gets recognized as a removable drive ( just like another drive in your computer) and you are free to copy paste delete just like you do on one of your hard drives. These days you get Flash drives that act as MP3 players too. And yes it got its name because of its small form factor. :)

A pen drive or a flash memory stick is a portable media device that you can plug into your computer via the USB port and copy information onto it (documents, images, music etc) and then plug it into another computer and copy the information off.

Basically it is used to transfer information from one computer to another.

pen drive is a removable drive that u can use to transfer data. it has better performance than any other temporary devices. if u are using windows than OS detects the drive when put. it becomes one drive in my computer. In linux, you have to mount the drive. for that
1. get to superuser mode in terminal by su
2. then create a directory named usb in /media
3. then enter command
mount /dev/sda1 /media/usb

thats was for linux if u use

pen drive== a floppy with greater storage
it can be used with almost all new systems by just plugging it into the usb drive

hi,
Pen drive is similar to cd or floppy. you can carry your data through this drive. you can easily insert the pen drive into any system usb port.
not like cd or floppy floppy drive or cd drive is not necessary.
