you are seriously quoted a no mans land situation
firstly the core duo is old should go for core2 duo
then if ur ready to shell out some extra 15k you are definitely poised to get a gud deal from HP or dell
i think dell latitute is priced 49k and has pretty gud config. else go for hp dv2610 or similar series near 60k
point is ur engineering student like me if u buy some 40k lappy it will already be old config and laptop config upgrades are hard on pockets.so be wise and buy a better config from hp (preferably)
u will get nation wide support and quality is rock solid.
still AMD turion based laptops from acer are worth a try and they will fit in ur price band pretty nicely with some equally gud performance.
some more tips would be buy atleast 1gb ram (its cheap these days) and try to get nividia 7800go card based machine.
i bet ur machine will be as gud for coming 4 years

Avoid local brand computer, I got cheated by arcamax india recently, they gave me a laptop costing me 40k, but in 3 months it stoped powering on,the company also did not repair under the warranty saying the laptop was tampered hence the waranty void

go for brands such as hcl or compaq instead of lenovo or acer coz both provide same quality but the former are more cheaper as per your requiremants

Buy Hp invents laptops
u like tobuy a second hand or new one
then u go to the shop and see which one is good and u fined it ok
but iam thimnking hp invents are good quality
