Why wasn't the oil rich Texas state allowed to become independent from the United States?

Texas was once an independent Republic, from 1836 to 1845. But, they were on the verge of bankruptcy from the battle for their independence and from the Mexican-American War. Plus it made more sense to be a part of a much-stronger US as a state for security and defense reasons. Oil wasn't discovered in TX until the 1880's.

When Texas voted to join the United States after the Civil War they insisted on keeping the provision that they could always have the right to secede. It is still part of out state law. Back then oil hadn't even been discovered. George W. even brought up the topic in 1995 if the EPA didn't back off on the demands they were making for the auto emissions program. He made a speech shortly after he became governor and stated "He took great umbrage at the EPA tell us what was best for Texas, and we could figure out our own program. If they didn't like it he and the Texas Guard would meet them at the Red River.

We were...as others have explained. We have a 'treaty' with the US....and can break away whenever we want. Too bad someone doesn't have the b@lls to start the proceedings. Because we have it ALL in Texas....I kid you not. What we don't have...you don't need.
