That's a tough question. When I was younger, at home raising our children, it was nice to have a few close friends to share the events of your days with, complain to, and get advice from, etc.
But now that the kids are grown, my husband and I are really enjoying the "fruits of our labors". We truly do enjoy being just the two of us. Close friendships at this point in my life would be too difficult to maintain since I'd always prefer spending time alone with my husband. So, for now: a lot of acquaintances that are nice to "run into and chat for a bit" but otherwise don't demand a lot of time.

Quality is much better. Quantity just gets annoying, especially if they are all idiots who just hang around others for no reason at all to be "cool".
The closer you are to your friends, the longer your friendship will probably last. Friendship doesn't last forever, as people change, but if you stick with quantity, you will have nearly no friends that you can associate with later on in your life.

Definitely quality... When things get rough, you would be surprised at just how fast those fair-weather friends disappear.
