With due respect, don't go for the salary of an IAS Office (by the way at the beginning it might be Rs.25,000/- per month). Look at the dignity, sense of achievement, service for a cause, authority, respect attached with the Indian Administrative Service. There are many Doctors, Engineers, Accountants, Art students serving as IAS Officers. So, it does not matter what is your academic background - what matters is that how proficient are you in your subjects. Moreover, only academic excellence cannot make an IAS Officer - the overall personality thru' various tests is judged to get the cream. It is the dream of many a youth to become an IAS officer.

Legally, depends on length of service starting from approximately Rs 25000/-.Illegaly depends on the individual's degree of honesty.Any stream will do but application is more important.
