Well, in Spanish there is a verb which translates as 'to hamstring a bull', which seems a bt excessive, but in my opinion the most unusual words in English are "Flammable" and "Inflammable", simply because they have exactly the same meaning! WHY???!!

Padparadschah

I read that word in a romance novel when I was a child (perhaps 9), and I have always remembered it.

It's an orange sapphire, and I finally saw one last week (some celebrity pointed out she was sporting an 'orange sapphire' on the red carpet - I noticed she didn't *say* padparadschah). :)

its not the most unusual but every Saturday in the Guardian Magazine they have strange word. This week is was....'spune' - an involuntary, melodically pointless humming or whistling. it can be used to mask the fact that you really really annoyed, but 'spune' is also emitted in situations when silence feels uncomfortable, but there is nothing really to be said.

Antidisestablishmentarianism.

It's a real word.
The meaning has something to do with the Church of England.

Obsequious is an odd word. It means someone who panders to people. Another one I love is extemporaneous, it means to blurt out.
