I like the Hotel zone in Cancun. By May the spring breakers will be gone. Cancun is shaped like a 7. The calmer water is at the top of the 7 and closer to the clubs. The long side of the 7 the water has more wave action. We like the all-inclusive because you pay one price and the wallet stays in the safe. But if you like trying different restaurants than go the the other way.Pay for hotel and buy drinks and food extra.
The Palace resorts are getting good reviews and they are all-inclusive plus they include some free excursions.
To get around Cancun, go the bus route only 65 cents. Taxis can get expensive. Take a ferry over to Isle Mujeres and rent a golf cart and see the island. Much to do in Cancun. Check out the Eco-parks (X-Caret or Xel Hal). If you like snorkeling do the Snorkel Adventure to Puerto Morelos.
If you tell us what you like to do, you will get many responds.
Check out www.tripadvisor.com. Many reviews and suggestions on the Cancun forum.
Good Luck and enjoy your planning and research.

If you want crazy busy nightlife, shopping and crowded beaches stay in Cancun. If you want more privacy and more relaxation go to the Riviera Maya just south of Cancun. I have been to both and prefer the Riviera. It's a lot more mellow and the prices are just as competitive. Best deals are for the all inclusive resorts. Meaning all drinks and food is included in the cost. Take advantage of any free excursions that your resort may offer to the Maya ruins, etc. They are so worth it. Don't forget you passport. I stay with Palace Resorts when we travel there. www.palaceresorts.com for more info.

My parents bought a timeshare in cancun (at the Royal Mayan)back in 1989 and I've been going there ever since. I'm 24 now and just booked my honeymoon in cancun at the JW Marriott. Even though I've been tons of times, I still can't wait to go back.
If you are young, and like some fun nightlife, I would suggest going to Senior Frogs. Their drinks are amazing (and strong!) and it's always a great time. I prefer not to go into the serious clubs like coco bongo or daddy o's. I went in those a few years ago during spring break and they were crowded, hot, and somewhat scary. I agree with the previous answer that said to take the buses. they are so cheap, and safe. all you have to do is go out from your hotel to the road and wait for one to stop.
I don't really like going to excarete, tulum, or the other day trips that they so heavily advertise down there. i prefer to drink at the pool and swim in the ocean. so i cant really give you advise on day trips. I have however parasailed twice in cancun and definitely recomend doing that.
the one thing i can't stand about cancun is that from the moment you step off the plane, they harrass you to buy things from them. t shirts, trips, taxi rides, food, etc. it gets old REALLY fast. I prefer to keep to myself and not talk to random mexicans, so this annoys me. I've found that if you give them a dirty look and keep walking, or just flat out ignore them, it helps. obviously it's not bad enough to prevent me from going back!
good luck, have fun, and stay safe! if you'd like any other info, i'd be glad to help. me and my family consider cancun to be our second home

We own 2 wks of timeshares at the Royal Sands and go for 2 wks a year. We love it. There's lots to do. Go snorkeling in Puerto Morales, you can book through your resort. If you want a good deal on a rental go to the following rental websites:
