you can reduce you page file usage by:
right click my computer and select properties ..
in advanced tab find out the page file usage on different disks.
u can try following too:
1.be wise and don't dump ur main drive(c:) with useless stuff and keep it as empty as possible.
2.if ur using NTFS don't compress ur main drive.
3.remove junk software..no point keeping 5 different media players which most often run back ground services.
4.go to manage tab (right click my computer click manage) and disable unused services.
this should help ...
5.else get software like tune up utilities 2006 this should be helpful for overall maintenece.
6.dump the useless and crapy Windows xp
ans switch to LINUX ..man ur machine will run like a horse ..[:)] start with SUSE or KUBUNTU
u can even run 3D desktops...
plus all ur daily softwares at lightening pace

May be its time to clean your hard disk and check for infection and drive performance. Uninstall clutter and defrag your drive(s). Unless what kind of applications are run on it its difficult to judge the performance of your PC. 512 MB is reasonable. Do you have a graphics card? :)

512 MB is quite low for current Windows applications. You can check out RAMBoost. I have a review on it at http://lavanyadeepak.blogspot.com/2006/12/ramboost-memory-freeup-tool.html

what kind of video card do you have?

look under processes and see what programs are hogging your RAM and disable them(if you know what they are).
