Actually "NO" there is no need, although I guess that most down is a bye product from the meat, check this website to see theres no need to kill the goose, but I bet it smarts a bit. In the index click "origin of down"

most do yes, the geese are specially bred and raised for the purpose. so far as i know, the down must still be plucked by hand. They may have invented a machine to do it by now, but I am not sure about that. Since the goose must usually be dipped in boiling water to remove the feathers and down, it is good that they are dead. They may have ways of removing the down nowadays that I am not aware of, without killing the goose. That would be a good thing, as they would keep on providing it as is it regrows.

The down is the fine warm feathers on the underbelly and breast of a goose. These feathers are plucked and grow back quite quickly, usually once or twice a year but can be plucked more times but it is not recommended.

I dont think of they kill ducks merely for the feathers. My guess is the ducks are killed for their meat after which the feathers get used. unhappy yet genuine? My prominent pillow is down, Im a foul guy or woman.

I believe when they kill the geese for food, they sell the feathers. Sorry.
