I believe it comes from the Greek archè which also gives us the words archaeology, anarchy, monarch, etc. Greek is notoriously difficult to translate to English and one Greek word typically has many many English meanings, depending on the context.

The most commonly known meaning of archè is "origin" or "beginning" (the Greek Bible begins "in te archè" or "in the beginning", and archaeology is the study of origins, beginnings, old things, or forerunners). But a broader and perhaps better translation is "principle" or "essence".

The suffix -ana usually means a collection of things related to a common object or idea, e.g. Americana refers to whatever is quintessentially American.

Add the two together and you have archana. In the most common usage of Archana, that of the two sections of the Tarot deck of cards, the different Archana are a collection of principles, such as strength, death, love, luck, failure, stagnation, etc. used to understand past, present, and future events.

Hope this helps.
