$3500 is actually a pretty good amount of money to begin building an investment portfolio with. If you don't want to spend the time and effort to pick individual stocks, ETFs could be a good choice for you. Many index funds require minimum investments of $3000, which would mean you need to put all of your money into one index, which isn't bad - it is my opinion that ETFs offer more choices and flexibility.
