You will have a much more satisfying life if you concern yourself with whether those in your life are pleasing to you rather than if you are pleasing to them. In other words, please yourself. That's not being selfish, contrary to mother's opinion. The reason the advice is sound is that you cannot be a good friend unless you are content and happy.

Not telling him would hurt him even more. I think that you should tell both of them the truth about how you feel. Lying to one means lying to both, right? And by hurting both of them, you ultimately loose both of them. So tell them the truth.

Well if you like one then ask him out. Don't try to feel guilty about the other guy he'll get over it.
