I can't speak for everyone, but I can see why a teacher might move individuals who have a hard time focusing to the front. ADHD has really been a serious issue. I had no idea I was nearsighted until 5th grade when my teacher noticed my squint and my grades improved when I moved to a front desk. There are also those students who need to be seen for their sneaky ways...

When there was a choice, I always sat in the front of the room, so that I could easily see the board. Because of that I had no idea that I was near-sighted until I was a sophomore in high school. My mom was a teacher. I was grading papers for her in the back of her classroom while she was putting up a new bulletin board display. When she was done, she asked me how it looked. I walked to the front of the room and told her that it looked fine. She was appalled. I should have been able to see the bulletin board from where I was sitting. Needless to say, I had an appointment with an eye doctor shortly thereafter.

Some times they are students that do not do well academically and it is an attempt to be sure they hear what is going on. Other times it is disruptive students that the teacher wants to keep an eye on.

To keep a closer eye on the student, or if the student needs some extra attention or help, maybe?

In my daughter's case, it was so the teacher could judge her expressions and rephase something for better understanding without calling attention to her personally.

When I was high school, I was moved to the front so I would keep my fat mouth shut.

So that they can keep an eye on them better, or because they think the student needs glasses.
