1. Overconsumption by people in wealthy nations - we MUST learn the difference between living sanely and resourcefully and living as though there are infinite resources for our greed
2. Corporate influence of oil companies on government policies - these guys are billionaires from it - do you think they want to promote alternatives they wont profit from?
3. Lack of education of the general population on these issues

Urgency in the mind of the public does not translate into dollars spent on alternative energy. This is because in real dollars, energy, and especially oil, has been cheap for a long time. If you were an auto maker and people were still buying gas guzzlers, you would keep making them. The reason we still consume is because it is still cheap. As prices rise the "urgency" will became a real change in behaviours. This will translate into investment to find new ways to power our lives. At the same time, our consumption of these older sources of power will diminish until we are almost completely independent of them.

So when you are frustrated that new sources of power are not widespread, you should look at how the people around you, and even you yourself are spending your money. Likely you are rewarding the companies you don't like with your dollars.
