The teachers in my district are considering going on strike. Essentially, the school department and Teachers' Union are unable to come to an agreement about contractual issues. Most often they have been actively negotiating a contract for an extended period of time and have not come to an agreement. This often extends beyond a year or longer. In most cases, the Union members opt to strike when they believe that they are not being respected by the School Department. It is important to keep in mind, though, that the teachers work directly with the students. They know about the needs of their kids and are not necessarily being selfish with their contractual demands. Most elementary teachers spend more than $1,000. a year in their classrooms in our district. They shouldn't have to threaten a strike to get a cost of living raise.

They are tired of being treated like dirt by their district, probably.
