My boyfriend is a wonderful person who is very kind and loving. He grew up in a world of poverty, and was physically and emotionally abused by his parents. He overcame the tragedies in his life and is now a very successful man. However, I believe he still has scars that have not healed yet.

My boyfriend does not seem bothered when people insult him. We work in the same office, and one day one of our co-workers called him several names of a racist nature. I was very angry, but when I asked him, he said that it did not bother him.

This has happened quite a few times. I wonder if he is blocking certain emotions of anger. Perhaps blocking certain emotions was one of his means of survival.

He could be using what is called defense mechanisms. which we use when something is not tolerable for us to withstand. Or he could just be at peace with himself and people who are not nice. Letting it slide off his back and doesn't worry about such trivial things.

Why don't you ask him what he thinks?

Yes it is possible to block out certain emotions, maybe he just doesn't care what people think of him, which can be healthy. But, if he is constantly blocking out all emotions and not feeling anything, that can be unhealthy.

Also, this co-worker in your office who's making racist comments is way out of line/very unprofessional and management should be notified.

If you think he has scars that are still not healed from his childhood than maybe he might consider seeing a therapist for a while, I think therapy can be a good idea for anyone.

Take care.

Sure some people can be unhealthily blocking, but some other people have just risen above it all. I haven't been offended by what anyone called me for the past 15 years or so. I simply don't care what people like that think of me.

I still get angry at certain things, but being offended by names is alien to me.
