For some economical reasons North American Oil Companies and Car Manufacturers discouraged the introduction of Diesel in America. Diesel fuel is more efficient, one litre of Diesel supplies by far more calories than one litre of gas. A diesel engine is cleaner when properly tuned up, is sturdier, and has lots of torque. In Europe Diesel is quite popular and some North American cars (Ford, Jeep) are available with Diesel engine. I, personally, am driving a VW Jetta TDI. In the city I can make 17 km per litre of Diesel and on the freeway I run for 20 km. Speed? According to my GPS I reached 209km/h. Not too bad for a 1.9 lt engine and 100 HP max power.

when the U.S. gets with the low sulphur bit you will see more cars running diesel , as of now they keep it in 3/4 ton trucks because of emission laws, also do you remember the 350 that G.M. made from a converted Olds. gas engine , absolute p.o.s. and it scared the entire American industry .

People just never caught on to the idea of driving a car that sounded like a truck.
