Also .... when presiding over the funeral of military personnel .... they often say that "they made the ultimate sacrifice" and speak as if the person or persons have a clear pass to heaven.

What I was wondering is .... is this any different than other groups that promise a reward for suicide bombers ? Do you put any group of people on such a pedestal ????

From last to first, last one first, we do not put death on a pedestal.

Yeah, it's a lot different than the reward promised suicide bombers, it's grief at the loss of life for us, not a celebration of death.

The ultimate sacrifice referred to is the gift given by one who sacrifices his/her life so that another may live. It is a direct reference to the Christian concept of Christ dying for the sins of others, something soldiers do everyday on foreign soil for people like you and me.

And the first one, last...if you want more that a humble yes, go to google video and pull up "Only God knows why military video" and enjoy Kid rock.

Respect for people who actually serve in the military is NOT putting them on a pedestal! It's showing respect for someone who has chosen and followed through with a promise of service to defend their country. These people rely on their fellow countrymen & women to welcome them back home again after the horrors of war. Even in death, they hope their efforts are not in vain. They ARE "America's Finest" and they HAVE made the "Ultimate Sacrifice." They gave their lives. They do not assume this means a "clear path" to heaven unless they're religiously inclined. I personally know quite a few service people who have no notion what so ever of any kind of "reward" for their service. (Just the ability to do their job and get home as soon as possible.)
There is a great difference between promises of heavenly promiscuity for the suicide bomber, and the honor given to our military service men and women. Don't get these two concepts confused. If you had been in the service, as I have, there would no confusion at all.
Don't judge until you've been there.
