Even if it's an indoor cat or has tags..........indoor cats get out, cats and dogs lose their collars and tags. Why would anyone NOT choose to invest in a microchip to protect their pet if they really care about it? I don't understand why so many animals at the pound are strays and not microchipped. I have 5 animals that are chipped at the moment......... the peace of mind is priceless.

well I know I wanted to have mine done, but the vet said they'd do it when they fixed him. so when he got fixed they never did it, and they keep putting it off. now he's well over a year old and still doens't have it. my vet procrastinates.

as for why anyone would voluntarily not get it done? well my guess would because they don't care that much to waste the money. declawing is worth it to most people (cruelty!) because then the cat can't claw them or their stuff, but getting a chip isn't going to do anything like that, so why bother wasting their money? but that's just my guess.

You're assumming that the lost pet will even be scanned if it's picked up. Chipping your pet around here is pretty much useless. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the chips. All of my livestock are microchipped, however where I live, I seem to be the only person with a reader. After all, they're not cheap. If your pet winds up in the shelter in my neck of the woods (and in many other rural shelters across the US) he's SOL unless you actually come out and see him.

My dogs have the ranch name tattooed in their right ear (well, not my Chihuahua, but he never goes anywhere without me). Where I live, it does more good than a chip that no one has a reader for.

I'm waiting for the day when they finally get the microchips with GPS tracking on the market. Digital Angel is experimenting with it now, looks like they'll hit the market at around $200 a chip.

Either because they don't want to take the time or money to go have it done, they don't think their animal will ever leave their property, unaware of how it works or that it exists, ignorance. Personally, I doubt any of my animals would leave my property but every single one of them is chipped anyway! If someone chose to steal them or they did wander off one day, at least they'd know who owns them. In my county it is now law to have your animals microchipped because of the over population of strays. I love the idea personally, forcing people to be more responsible!!

Good point---- I think some people are afraid that the scanners (different brands) are not always universal/will not work in other countries, etc. --- or perhaps the information is editable/changing and that someone could steal ther animal and "change it's identity" --- or perhaps they're concerned about cost/etc.

many people are not familiar with the new technologies/don't understand how many animals are lost and not returned.

change/new technology is always accepted slowly/with caution

~ They may feel it costs too much money
~ They may think it will hurt the pet/is cruel
~ Lack of education as to the benefits of being identified in such a way
~ Not knowing microchipping is available
~ They think they have done enough to identify the pet
~ They do not care enough (unfortunately)

look at this site..this is why some choose not to microchip.

another problem with the chip is , they are only good if someone looks for them. not all shelters have the devices to check nor do all vets have it either. not to say its bad or you shouldn't do it but its worth thinking about.

Something your vet will never tell you..........................

It is recently being discovered that Microchips are causing cancer in our pets. Until I learn more then I already know about Microchipping (and I've already researched all the pros and cons), and my vet can give me a guarantee, I am not taking the chance. People's pets are exposed to enough carcinogens in their lives without deliberately adding one more.

Not every area has the technology for a microchip setup. If my dog is microchipped in my town but he's lost in the next province in a town that is not set up for microchipping....what good has it been?

It is by no means a guarantee that your animal will be brought home safely to you with or without the chip. Are you aware that people who steal, or find and keep your animal, don't feel obligated to take the animal in to find out who it belongs to?
