Honestly. Tell him that worms, normally live under the dirt, and that when it rains, it's wet on top of the dirt, and they like to be where it is wet, therefore they crawl up out of the dirt, and crawl around in the rain on the ground. When they are done being in the rain, they crawl back under the dirt. Hope this helps. Take care.

Worms are, obviously, alive before it rains. They are just forced to come out of the ground when it rains hard; otherwise, they will drown.

They are always alive even when it's not raining.

They live under the surface down below the roots of the grass.

When it rains they come up to the top so they can breath better because they breath through their skin.

That worked for me when I was a kid, maybe it will work for you too. Trust me, I swallowed that fish story hook, line and sinker.

When it rains worms crawl out for air.
Worms breath air through their skin, so when they are in the ground when it rains, thier small borrows that they live in get full of water, and they can't breath, so they head up ward to the surface for air.

But of coarse they are alive in the earth as you know.
