Allergies in a new born is something you want to take very serious.
If you feel he/she has one take her to the doctor with a list of her reactions. and what was happening at the time.(Eating, bathing ect) Rash, hives, respiratory problems, diarrhea, whatever the case is.

As to answer your question on how soon can you tell... right away normally.

My son was very congested as a result of a casein (dairy) allergy.

I eliminated the dairy from my diet and he was just fine. Its a trial and error thing. Start with the most common allergen (dairy) and if the symptoms don't improve within 3 weeks or so, try another allergen.

depends on the severity of the allergy. It could cause a rash, respitory problems, diarrea, ect.

If the baby has red skin or is scratching something almost constantly.

If you see any rashes or weird colored (like...uber green) bowel movements go to the doctor immediately.
