My husband and i have a LOT of repairs to do to the house.... Like an insane amount. I built a website to help comunicate what my husband and i want to do since we are currently in Iraq right now and we would really like this done while we are over here so when we get home its all about the kids.

My question is what is the best way to save on money with out cutting major corners. I can send the web addy if you IM me but i didnt want to post it up for the world to see.

It is a whole lot of work.... :(

My biggest recommendation is to do most of the work yourself. I know that sounds rather obvious but doing your own home repairs saves a lot of money. Secondly go with lower cost options like linoleum over tile and other things like that. Also remember that Internet places like EBay are great for finding super cheap stuff...Everything from faucets to lampshades. Shop around and you can find some great deals on second grade lumber too.

Good luck!

It's going to be very difficult to get anything done from overseas. Especially if you want to save money. Doing the work yourself is the easiest way to save money. Contractors have a 300% to 500% mark up from the cost of materials.
What types of repairs are you talking about? You can save a lot of money on some materials. For example, if you are replacing trim in a room, you can spend anywhere from 50 cents to $5 per foot for the material. It all depends on what you want. Trim boards designed to be painted are much less expensive than those made to be stained. Soft woods are much cheaper than hard woods. You can install laminate floors for a couple bucks a sq. ft. or tongue and groove hardwood for $10 or more per sq. ft. You can use sheet vinyl in the kitchen or ceramic tile for 10 times the cost. If you need new plumbing, you can spend thousands or hundreds on bath fixtures. Expensive carpet or cheap carpet. The list could go on and on. It all depends on your budget and tastes.

Well, it all depends on what you need to do, and what your goals are. If you are looking to maybe resell soon, you might do things you wouldn't do just for yourself. such as painting the kitchen a mellow yellow color. the appraisals come back ten percent higher from this one change alone.

Send the web addy to tootall1121@yahoo.com and I can give you a better idea on each individual project. Always buy and do the best you can afford to. If you plan on staying in the house a long time, buy quality, long lasting stuff. If you don't, but cheaper but pretty stuff.

First of all thank you for you and your husbands service. If I were you I would apply for ABC's Extreme Home Make Over.
This would make a great story. The link to apply is bellow.
Good luck and be safe.
