Hormones During Pregnancy

Introduction

The changes in hormone levels in pregnant women are truly profound. Most men find it difficult to fully comprehend what is causing all these changes from mood
swings to constipation, extra sleep to food cravings.

Quite simply, it is the effect of various hormones that is the main contributor to these changes in your partner, but more than that, it's these very same hormone changes that enable her to carry the baby for nine months and assist it to develop.

In a previous article, we discussed in detail the role of the vital hormone b-HCG (beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin hormone) during pregnancy, then in another issue we discussed the effects of the hormones produced in the pituitary gland, LH (lutenising hormone) and FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) during the ovulation process.

This new piece expands the subject to cover progesterone and estrogen (oestrogen), as well as some other lesser well known hormones.

The precise intricate interactions between all of the various hormones swimming around her body is still to be fully explained, however, a large part of the main functions of each hormone is understood and research is continuing on mapping out the full picture.

Yes, it's very normal, especially in the 2nd & 3rd trimesters. With the warm weather coming on it is also common for ur body to retain fluid in your extremities ( legs, hands, ankles, feet, fingers). Is this ur 1st baby? It's different with every pregnancy but mine was worse with my 1st daughter who is 3. i now have a 3 month old & I didn't swell nearly as bad this time around but i wasn't pregnant during the hottest months of the year. I say the weather has a factor in it b/c u sweat more & sometimes ur body can't get rid of the x-tra fluid fast enough so as a result u retain the fluid (swell) until ur body adjusts. If it worries u talk to ur OB, but some things to try are drinking plenty of water 8-10 glasses a day & snack on something that isn't too high in sodium like crackers. I made the mistake of letting myself crave TGIFridays Cheddar & bacon potato skin chips & my ankles & hands didn't appreciate it 15 minutes later! The sodium will help with the dizziness. IF the dizziness worsens or doesn't seem to get any better within a few weeks talk to ur DR & in the mean time try to rest & stay off ur feet.

With my last baby I had so much water retention that i had cankles and had to go up a shoe size. Let your doctor know. this pregnancy I can get very dizzy and am off of work for it. No big concerns... just growing a baby. Mention it to the doc. He did tests and said all is fine, including iron levels

you should give your dr a quick call tomorrow morning, swelling in the legs, and a rise in blood pressure is sometimes caused by pre-eclampsia...
if you were just getting dizzy, well thats normal when you stand up too fast, but if you are swelling excessively in a short amount of time and it's not going down with hydration (drinking lots and lots of water) and putting your legs up high, lots of reasons why you could have swelling... but if you aren't feeling "RIGHT" call your doctor usually your body is telling you something when you don't feel "right" Good Luck and I hope you will be feeling fine tomorrow ;)

Wow get in to a doctor ASAP!!!! Any time you have a sudden change get it checked. Water gain and such happens but normally not all of a sudden. That sounds suspiciously like Toxemia. Be careful and get to a doctor and let them know how fast this change occurred. The speed with which this happened is what makes me think this is something to be concerned about.

NO this should not happen...you need to see the DR. asap....you may have high blood pressure and if that is the case it needs to be treated so it doesnt get any worse....if left untreated it can be very dangerous to you and the baby...see your Dr. tomorrow to be on the safe side...Good Luck!

it can be normal from water retention but my guess is high blood pressure let the Dr know. don't drink pop, watch salt in take, rest as much as possible.

Go to your doctor. I don't want to conjecture about the causes. Just get it diagnosed and treated.
