For the past four years, this historic Art Deco building has been under complete renovation and expansion. But now, as of November 3, 2006, the new Griffith Park Observatory has reopened !

The planetarium re-opened with an all-new state-of-the-art star projector...for giving truly STELLAR planetarium shows.This will be a full-sky, laser projection system that you'll certainly not want to miss.

There will be many changes! So very many changes, in fact, that the details wouldn't fit onto this page...

Among the proposed recommendations are :

(1) Construction of six multi-level parking structures;

(2) Two aerial tramways;

(3) Street widening throughout the Park;

(4) Introduction of traffic into the interior of the Park;

(5) Division of the Park into separate themed "lands;"

(6) Creation of a hotel, restaurant, culinary school and sports complex in
the Park's interior;

(7) Redesign of the 18-hole golf course at the expense of the Zoo Magnet
School;

(8) Development of a commercial pier on the Los Angeles River at the Los Feliz Bridge; and

(9) Additional public-private partnerships and revenue-enhancing schemes.

so, when are you leaving for it ?

It's open, but, unlike the past, you can no longer drive up to the site. You have to make a reservation first (by calling a specific number--which I don't have--or going to a building near the L.A. Zoo and Autry Museum to make it), then take a bus from that building to the Observatory and back. If I remember correctly it's all free--for now.
