I've noticed that some people's spelling on this site is atrocious most of the time, and it has Spellcheck!

Your question is an interesting one because the headline asks one thing--and your explanation discusses something different.

1. Does anyone think being ABLE TO SPELL (emphasis mine) is important anymore? I do not believe being able to spell is as important as it once was.

2. ...spelling is atrocious.... I DO however believe that proper spelling is important. People make judgments (right or wrong) about our intellect based upon how we present ourselves in communication.

This is true of both written and oral communication. If I'm well spoken and have a smooth [keyboard], I will tend to be judged as intelligent. If, on the other hand, my words are laced with profanity or my writing is littered with grammar errors and misspellings, people will assume I have less intelligence.

Spelling is important. Being able to spell (unaided) is probably not as important as it once was. I went to Catholic grade school AND use spellchecker...trying to cover all my bases.

Sorry for the all caps Sister...this thing doesn't have italics or underline.

People are very lazy, especially on the Internet. They don't realize that their carelessness puts the very existence of the English language as we know it in jeopardy. Standardized spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc is very important because of the fact that the spoken word tends to vary, something unavoidable simply by the nature of language as it evolves from region to region. For example, If Bob from Australia and Sven from Greenland don't have a common point of reference by which to communicate (writing), there will be an increasing rift between the two dialects, hence the two cultures. And finally comes the obvious reason good spelling is important: bad spelling damages your credibility.

I still think spelling is important. I realize that some people just can't "see" the words in their heads, and have to reinvent the spelling every time they write a specific word. But if the grammar is wretched too, it's often the case that the question is not all that bright, and I usually just move on.

I'm either a snob or living in the wrong century...

I think Spell check is one of the reasons people can't spell anymore. Spell check has to be checked. So many words are close, and if you spell a word wrong, Spell check sees the different meaning and lets it pass.
I had a friend tell me she has slipped in her ability to spell because of Spell check.
Also, the problem stems from IM and Internet short cuts to words. Young people like them because it is like when we were kids we used codes, so adults wouldn't know what we were talking about. (everything is taboo when you're a kid)
Still, I judge a person's intelligence by their ability to write and spell correctly. Lately, it's not just individuals, but corporations and newspapers and television. Yikes!
Now, excuse me ... I have to spell check this.

I'm old school, so I can't stand to see all the bad spelling. But my kids are teenagers, yet they are very careful about their spelling online. Bad spelling bugs them too. I guess I taught them well!

By the way, I never use spellcheck. I think it's a crutch.

Being able to spell and talk "correct English" is really important.

On Y!A it seems some are too busy grabbing points to even do a spell check. And the grammar is also terrible.

I think so most definately....spell check doesn't catch everything so tehrefore it is our responsiblity to know how to spell what we are typing. For example for the retards that don't know the difference between "no" and "know" spell check will not recognize this as a mistake because it is spelled correctly but it is not used correctly in the sentence. So therefore, a general knowledge of your native language is imperative so you don't sound like a bluthering idiot.

It's important sure, but give people a break. I remember being twelve and we thought it was so cute 2 use little abbreviations. Kids just spend time on the internet and texting today rather than talking on the phone for hours like I did, so today you don't have to be a middle-school teacher to come in contact with kid-phrasing. And once it becomes a habit, it's harder to break.

Yeah, it can be irritating sometimes. I think we all make typing mistakes, but good spelling skills seem to be a thing of the past. More annoying then bad spelling, I think is all these abbreviations. Some of them I can't even work out what they are supposed to say.

People who can't spell end up writing things that don't mean what they wanted to say.

AUGUR = person who foretells the future.
AUGER = giant drill for boring holes in the ground.

If you can't spell, and you write one of these down the way the other one is spelled, nobody will know what you're talking about.
