Enlightenment, self awakening, self realization all are relative terms, in simple language it means Realization.

One of the most helping quote to understand this is, "those who realize there own self, realize God".

It is a very deep subject, dont know in which station you may be, or u asked the question just for the curiosity.

But yes awakening is obviously required for realising yourself then. But awakening is not the realisation, realisation is the last step, after understanding all the truths.

Where awakening depends upon sincere demand (or wish), urge for truth, meditation into the right path and a guide.

It is a play of words, which could mean nothing unless you know it is all about. I think within every one of there is a Soul and the purpose of all our spiritual journey is to realise this Soul within. Once you attain that, you are said to have self awakened or self realised.

Self realisation means awakening from a sleep of darkness of ignorance. It affects life a lot like one is transferred to a vast freedom of ocean-joy, from a limited and confinement of muddy pond of unnecessary desires and attachments. Then begins true life truly, and a wonderful world ahead awaiting.
