Sanjaya Malakar (born September 10, 1989 in Federal Way, WA) is a 17-year-old singer who is currently a contestant on the sixth season of the popular American television show American Idol. An Indian-American, he is the first person of Indian descent to make it to the top 24 of the show. Sanjaya's father is trained in Indian classical music. His sister also tried out for American Idol.
