The 49ers were all the miners who came to California during the California Gold Rush in 1849. This included most Americans from the Midwest and East, and many Europeans; travel took several months at least, which is why most people did not get to California until 49'.

Gold was discovered in 1848, but primarily, the only people who came in 48' were people within close proximity of California (i.e. San Francisco) and Spanish-speaking peoples (Sonorans and Chileans) from Central and South America.
