how is it that jeff gordon finished the first race in 10th but is 8th in points and didn't lead a lap.?

I am a huge gordon fan but i was just wondering.

some drivers started the season with negative points, as they were penalized before the season started.

matt kenseth elliot sadler michael waltrip and scott riggs all got their crew chiefs suspended fiens and driver poitns lost as well as owner points so they starte dthe race with negative points and thats y gordon is 8th on the standings
