I used to roam around all the places of India! Through out the nation comparatively for auto-drivers I can put 90-95% marks. Once, in Bombay after a long travel, when I happened to give 60 Rupees, for the auto meter which showed 56 Rupees, the auto driver immediately returned the balance 4 rupees! I told him just to keep it! But, showed his face uncomfortable and pressed the money forcibly in to my palm! There I could see 95% drivers are honest! Even at Hyderabad I saw the same good things with the auto drivers! They never demand for out-of-meter, and out-of-fair money! I felt proud about them!!
But, as a resident of Chennai, I feel bad about our Auto-drivers! Here may be 5-10% are good, and remaining 90-95% are not up to the mark!
NO AUTO DRIVER COMES FOR METER CHARGES, BUT DEMANDS UNFAIR, FAIR IN FLAT RATE! NO GOVT. SO FAR COULD CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOURS! THEY UTTERLY FAILED WITH THESE "STRANGE PEOPLE" AND THEIR PECULIAR SELFISH PSYCHOLOGY!!
Will it be changed ever?

The personality or mentality of an individual develops on the framework of his/her family background, social environment, friends /relatives and family status in the society . In the present case we are discussing the behaviour/mentality of auto drivers of Chennai,here, I think that an auto driver can not become like that only after joining the present profession, rather it has come slowly by the route they were nurtured in the society. It means we have to accept that the society at chennai as a whole is responsible for this and not the auto driver alone. If we are honest,kind and affectionate to others there can not be a case like the present story in any of the cities in India

You are right.
The taxi drivers in Mumbai are the best. taxis are cheap and the the drivers can be trusted. they are honest and taxi is cheap.
Hyderabad, the auto drivers charge only the meter fare and do not cheat the passengers.
In CHENNAI most autos are not owned by the drivers. They take an auto on rent for Rs. 120 / a day plus they have to put the petrol.ffor a distnce which the bombay taxi will take Rs. 15 the auto driver in Chennai demands Rs. 50!
They exact the money from innocent people who do not know tamil and are new to the city. even the city dwellers are sick and tired of these auto drivers.
Yes it can be changed if the auto drivers are fined for false meter charges.by the Police,
Will the Police do this?

The root cause of the problem is the people who do not stand up and oppose them. Unless the people do not put their foot down and refuse to pay up exhorbitant charges this fleecing is sure to continue.
Chennai sure has a good Public transport service, both bus and train, people sure could make good use of them. One just need to take the minimal hardship of walking to the railway station or bus stop (even if you have some luggages to carry). Now there is also the share Auto service, better to make use of it.
Until a complete boycott of Auto rickshaws is done, they would not mend their ways.

i strongly agree with ur point.... i have experienced the same not only with chennai auto people but all over tamil nadu... really these guys should be given a lesson...the government has to seriously check the use of charging meters.... but the worst case is that even they are mis calibrated to show higher rates... really without any severe law punishing some of this community they cannot be controlled...

u can not blame auto driver for that .its because of government .generally policemen accept bribe from them and they (auto driver ) impose on us
